A North Carolina teenager has been left ‘unrecognizable’ after suffering third-degree burns to 80% of his body while trying to complete a TikTok challenge that requires a spray paint can and a lighter.

Soccer star Mason Dark, 16, was trying the trend last Sunday when he nearly lost his life.

The very dangerous TikTok challenge involves using a lighter and igniting the contents of a spray paint can.

Mason’s family recalled hearing a “boom” in their Wake Forest home moments before seeing the teenager rush outside and jump into the lake with 75 per cent of his body burned.

He was rushed to hospital where he remains at the UNC burn center. The teenager’s mother, Holli Dark, told WRAL “he is unrecognizable”.

‘[We] just found out now from surgery, that he has third degree burns… it’s like a T in his back and that’s because he took his shirt off and then he got stuck or something that,’ Holli said.

“We only found out yesterday that it was actually 76% of his body.”

Holli has described her son as outgoing and is in disbelief she doesn’t recognize him.

“The way he looked when those kids saw him when he arrived, the way he looks now, it’s 100 times different,” she told the outlet.

Mason is expected to recover at the burn center for approximately six months, as the extent of his condition remains completely unknown. According to Holli, her son’s condition may change.

“He jumped into a river to put out the flames. Risk of infection from river water is high, in addition to 2nd and 3rd degree burns,” she wrote on GoFundMe.

On Friday night, more than $17,000 was raised to help pay for the teenager’s medical bills and other essentials.

Mason is one of many teenagers to have tried the risky TikTok challenge.

Several videos posted on the social media platform showed the challenge in action.

The most common way to do the quest is to apply spray paint to a piece of paper and light a flame over it. The flame remains intact as long as the lighter is lit.

A daring TikToker decided to take the challenge one step further and brought a can of spray paint into a fire pit, creating a huge fire.
