You know what happens when you forget to put on deodorant in the morning? All. Goes. Fake. Truly, the best deodorants for women can get you through anything, from a presentation you barely prepared for, to a yoga class you didn’t know was “hot.” The humble deodorant sets the tone for your day and can determine whether you spend it confidently or knowingly, sniffing your pits every hour and worrying about your apparent lack of odor protection.

You’re probably thinking about the deodorant you’re wearing right now and whether you should try something new (or even switch to a natural deodorant). If so, you’ve come to the right place. These days there is something for every type of need under the arms, that’s why we called in the pros and Charm staff members to see which of the supposedly best deodorants for women actually hold up. Some of us wanted healthy ingredients or 100% natural deodorants; others cared more about the smell or the sweetness of a roll-on. Either way, we have options for every price, flavor, and texture.

But first, let’s see what your next deodorant choice should look like. “The most important thing is to understand the difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant,” says Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, board-certified dermatologist. “Antiperspirants contain aluminum salts and work by reducing sweating, while deodorants have no effect on sweat production,” she says. “Instead, they primarily work to neutralize and reduce odors,” she adds.

Those of you who love reading ingredient lists should know that fragrance is what helps deodorants provide a fresh, clean scent. “Deodorants may also contain other ingredients like zinc neodecanoate that help enhance the odor neutralizing properties of a given fragrance,” says Woolery-Lloyd. When it comes to aluminum-free deodorants, shoppers will find ingredients like cornstarch or arrowroot powder to help stop sweating. “Sodium bicarbonate is another ingredient that’s sometimes added to aluminum-free deodorants to absorb sweat, but it can be irritating to people with sensitive skin,” Woolery-Lloyd notes.

Naturally, different deodorants work for different lifestyles. “Because antiperspirants control odor in addition to sweat, they’re especially helpful for people with active lifestyles and people who live in hot, humid climates where excessive underarm sweating can be difficult,” says Woolery-Lloyd. On the other hand, if you’re not a naturally sweaty person, regular deodorant or aluminum-free deodorant is your best bet. “It’s important to note that deodorants don’t reduce sweating, but for many people sweating isn’t a problem,” she says. “An aluminum-free deodorant is a great option for people who don’t care about sweat, and odor control is their primary concern,” she adds.
