The first steps in moving in and decorating a space are fun and exciting – it’s like drawing a blank canvas with endless potential. You can’t wait to find the perfect bed, sofa, or rug, and it’s satisfying when it all comes together. But what happens two or three years later?
The furniture and decor looks a lot like a closet full of clothes in that it’s only natural not to feel the same zeal years later. I bought a great piece of art on Etsy only to decide I absolutely couldn’t bear it months later. Within a year, my tastes had changed to favor more moody neutrals, proving that the design process truly is endless. But instead of completely revamping my apartment or spending thousands of dollars on new furniture, I discovered that small decorating swaps could have a big impact. Sometimes a small switch can change a room the same way a new sofa can.
Creating a space you actually want to be in could mean adding a sconce or two or creating mood lighting with a fancy candle. Whether it’s a new rug or a new pillow, a unique interior design can go a long way. For a list of items currently on my shortlist, continue browsing below.
