Faith plays an important role in the lives of many people and provides the guidance needed to get through the different seasons. A woman in her 90s has proven that it’s never too late to grow in her spiritual journey.

Values and belief systems may differ, but faith can bring peace and comfort to many people. However, many people can find comfort elsewhere and may never delve deeply into spirituality.

A woman has spent many years simply knowing God but not recognizing her need for more. At 94, she made a bold decision that inspired countless friends, family and strangers.

CALLED TO BE BAPTIZED

Ophelia White enjoyed her life in Ruston, Louisiana, and spent many Sundays at her local church. She came from a religious family and her mother encouraged her to be baptized as a young girl.

Unaware of the meaning of the ritual, she followed her mother’s nudging and continued her walk in faith. Decades passed and White believed she had a committed and intimate relationship with God.

However, when her roommate of eight years, Joy Campbell, noticed that she lacked confidence in her beliefs, this prompted her to do something bold and courageous.

THE INFLUENCE OF A COLOCATION

Joy asked White various questions and encouraged her to seek a personal relationship with God. They discussed religious topics for several weeks, and Joy constantly prayed for her friend.

Their fellowship motivated White and, over time, reignited his spiritual journey. In 2016, she took an unusual leap of faith for someone her age.

It can be very intimidating when older people decide to be baptized because they wonder what others will think of their decision.

White wanted to make her devotion to God public, so she professed her beliefs to the congregation of Cook Baptist Church. She felt called to be baptized, but unlike before, this time she knew exactly why she was completely dedicated to God.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE

The precious moment showed the 94-year-old in the baptismal waters wearing a shower cap and a blue t-shirt. She was excited as she held her breath and prepared for the submergence.

Friends, family and members of the congregation gathered at the Cook Baptist Church worship center to support his decision. White wanted others to know they could make a similar choice. She says:

“I want people to know it’s never too late. Go ahead.”

HIS INSPIRING DECISION

For Joy, this momentous day was an answer to many prayers, but for the rest of the church it had a different meaning. They were encouraged to pursue God wholeheartedly, regardless of their age.

His baptism also showed the power of faith-filled friendships and how a trusted companion can lead others down life-changing paths. Discipleship and Administration Pastor Todd Free shared:

“It’s inspiring for people, especially for the elderly, to know that God still touches hearts even in the elderly.”

He continued: “There are many others like Mrs. White who spent their whole lives thinking they knew Christ but later realized their need for Him.”

HE DID NOT KNOW GOD

Free said he prayed for their congregation and hoped others would have the same courage as White. He said his baptism was a testimony and a gift from God and added: “[we] are grateful [God] allowed us to be part of it. »

White’s christening also reminded roommate Joy of her husband, Henry Campbell. They had been married for over 30 years and she was surprised to learn something unexpected about his spiritual journey.

Although she was a deacon in their church, Joy discovered that her husband did not know God deeply or personally. She shared:

“I was surprised that he was not a Christian because he had served in the church for so long. As Christians, we have to realize that some of our members are active in service but do not know Jesus. ”

THEY HAVE BEEN TRANSFORMED

In 1980, when Henry was 64, he chose to commit himself completely to God. He remained a faithful follower of God until his passing in 2010, and Joy always remembered the miraculous change she saw in him after growing in his faith.

She was grateful to have witnessed the mental and spiritual transformation of her wife and White. Joy expressed:

“With my husband and Ophelia, it was a reminder that it’s never too late to become a Christian and never give up on someone. It takes time, a lot of time.”

ANOTHER ELDERLY WOMAN IS BAPTIZED

Baptisms are always special times for church families, and everyone celebrates the milestone in someone’s faith journey. Young children and adolescents often choose to commit themselves to God, and their childlike faith gives them boldness.

However, it can be very intimidating when older people decide to be baptized because they wonder what others will think of their decision. White’s bravery inspired many, as did another older woman’s choice to publicly commit herself to God.
