Al Roker snooped around his wife’s house and left flowers before dating but didn’t want to ‘ruin’ their friendship

TV star Al Roker has been married to his wife, Deborah Roberts, for a very long time, and it’s only gotten better over the years. The couple’s love began with a grand gesture and sweet friendship.

Al Roker and Deborah Roberts’ love is against all odds and corporate rivalry. Roberts and the meteorologist have been married for nearly three decades, and despite working for two rival companies, ABC and NBC, the couple leave it all behind once they’re home and in each other’s arms.

Roberts and Al first met in 1990 when she got a job as a reporter at NBC. They formed a healthy and good-natured friendship. Once speaking in an interview, Roberts explained that Al was “so sweet.”

She recalled how he often silenced his daughter and showed her pictures while they were at work. According to Deborah, she thought of nothing but friendship, and it remained that way for years.

At the time they met, Al was married to Alice Bell. The duo married in 1984 and remained together well into the 1990s. Bell also worked in the communications industry as a producer for WNBC-TV. While this was Bell’s first wedding, it was Al’s second time walking down the aisle.

The duo adopted their daughter, Courtney, and in 1994 the marriage ended. While the weatherman tried to work on his relationship with Bell, he and Roberts remained friends.

Roberts thought Al was adorable for talking about his family during their years of friendship. She described him as a nice guy and she appreciated their friendship. After a while, Roberts transferred to Miami when Al remained in the New York office.

During this period, the friends stayed in touch. Roberts also spent time in Atlanta before returning to New York in 1992 to work as a correspondent for Dateline NBC. By this time, Al and Bell were separated.

She and the TV star remained friends, and according to Al, he was not her type. He noted that she was dating “stallion muffins”. Deborah agreed to this, calling Al a nice guy, but was “a bit boring”. She relayed:

“He was a nice guy but a bit boring, too talkative. I just didn’t think of him beyond a friend.”

While it was clear that Deborah didn’t see their friendship beyond platonic, the same couldn’t be said for Al. The start of their romance took a little boost when Deborah was on a mission.

The long-time correspondent was sent on a mission to Barcelona in 1992 and left Al in charge of helping him keep his home safe while he was away. During this time, the famous meteorologist decided to poke around a bit.

On “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Al explained that he searched his pantry and fridge and found nothing. According to him, it was like she wasn’t using the kitchen. However, a day before Deborah returned home, Al played the perfect gentleman.

He stocked her fridge and pantry, making sure she didn’t run out of essentials. Al also bought flowers and left a “welcome home” note. Roberts went home to the grand gesture and described it as “very touching”.

At this point, she started to think there might be something more to all this sweetness. However, one thing led to another and the couple went on their first date. A few other dates followed.

Al and Roberts began their relationship and dated for two years, during which time she began to wonder if there was a marriage in their future. Al revealed that his wife was getting annoyed that he didn’t propose.

She then asked him when it would be. Al told Roberts he would pop the question before Groundhog Day, and he kept his word. While on a business trip to Arizona, the couple enjoyed a cool day with a view of the Grand Canyon, and it was there that Al got down on one knee.

Speaking about the proposal, Al joked that if Roberts had declined the proposal, one of them wouldn’t have returned. The duo got married and took their vows the following year at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Parts of their guest list included broadcast icons Barbara Walters and Katie Couric.

Being husband and wife and enjoying the beauty of marriage did not prevent them from competing in work. However, it all came down to work. Deborah has worked on ABC’s “20/20” since 1995, but occasionally appears as a fill-in on GMA.

Al revealed that on those days, when Deborah was working as a stand-in on the long-running show, he would come home and jovially say to her, “Hey sweetie, we crushed you like a bug again today.”

It’s been more than two decades since they took their vows, but it’s safe to say that nothing has brought Al and Roberts back to regret. Their love blossomed further on their wedding day and Al maintained his romantic gestures.

The star continues to prove that his gentlemanly gesture of filling his fridge years ago was not a unique thing. Roberts has described her husband as a full fledged romantic who leaves her tiny love notes.

She described the notes as funny, encouraging or naughty. Even when she traveled, Roberts noted that she would find these notes in her purse or bags. The TV presenter described her husband as a “true romantic”.

In 2020, Al was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which shook Deborah to the foundation. She remembers being devastated thinking about the possibility that he wouldn’t make it.

However, Al found strength in Roberts, letting people know that when someone “you love is also your best advocate,” it makes all the difference. Al overcame the illness and thanked his wife for being his rock.
