A few days before Euro 1996 football in England, the Brazilian legend Pelé looked at the France team and French football for Europe 1. Welcoming the tricolor game, the mythical number 10 of the Seleção affirmed that he appreciated French football, and that he hopes for a good performance from the Blues.

A footballing legend, Pelé kept a close eye on the development of his sport. The Brazilian icon, who died on Thursday at the age of 82, gave a long interview to Europe 1 in 1996, a few days before the Euro in England. On this occasion, the mythical number 10 of the Brazilian selection looked at the France team and French football in general. “I have always admired great French players like (Michel) Platini, (Alain) Giresse and (Jean) Tigana,” he said on Europe 1.

“In France, they play a bit the same style as in Brazil”

The “King” Pelé was dithyrambic on French football. “I appreciate French football because I find that in France, they play a bit the same style as we play in Brazil. They are more technical than physical”, detailed the Brazilian legend.

Pelé admitted that he was going to follow the course of the Blues at Euro 1996 with great interest: “I hope that France will have a good European Cup in England so that they can prepare well for the World Cup afterwards”. Words that resonate since 1996, the French team of Aimé Jacquet reached the semi-final of the European championship, two years before winning their first world title, in France, in 1998.
