Ashanti hopes to shed light on the sexual harassment happening in the music industry after she bravely shared her story earlier this month.

The 42-year-old singer – full name Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas – opened up to People magazine on Tuesday about the struggles she’s had to overcome during her two-decade career.

She said, “Honestly, I don’t know if any other artist would be able to handle what I had to deal with.”

Ashanti revealed that a close-knit male music producer originally offered her two songs for free, before going back on the offer and giving her an ultimatum to shower with him or pay $40,000. for each song.

Of this proposal, she said, “I really, honestly thought he was joking. You may feel like someone is cool, and in the back of their mind they have an ulterior motive.

“Things like this can happen in Ashanti, so it can happen to anyone – and I’ve heard worse stories.”

Earlier this month, Ashanti made a startling claim about a producer trying to redeem his songs in exchange for sex during an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show.

Speaking to hosts Charlamagne tha God, DJ Envy and Angela Yee, the 42-year-old singer revealed she’s been in a “crazy situation with a producer”, who she says has worked with her on two records.

After explaining to her that he told her she was his ‘buddy’ and that she ‘wouldn’t charge her’ for two songs they were working on, she said that everything changed when the album was released. .

To her horror, she said he asked her to “take a shower together”, which she thought was a joke.

“I thought he was joking,” she explained, before saying it was clear he was “very serious” or that he would expect her to pay him “$40,000 per piece”.

She continued, “Again, I thought he was joking because, you know, we had been working together for, I don’t know, a few weeks.”
