Carli Lloyd and her husband, Brian Hollins, were high school sweethearts who saw their relationship stand the test of time despite their demanding professional careers as athletes.
Although little is known about Hollins, the professional golfer was quick to sing his wife’s praises for her determination and athletic gifts as a well-known sports player.
He was by her side as her career took her all over America and watched her compete in the Olympics before becoming husband and wife in a picture-perfect beach wedding.
Who is Brian Hollins?
Hollins is a professional golf player who grew up in Delran, New Jersey. While his future wife lived on one side of Vermes Field, he lived on the other. Prior to becoming a golf assistant, he worked as a teacher and assistant professional at Willow Brooke Country Club.
He also comes from a family of golf lovers and in 2015 he won the OMEGA Player of the Year award and the PAO Player of the Year award after playing in tournaments as early as 2009.
Golf has also played a part in his relationship with Lloyd, as the professional golfer has explained that Lloyd’s first attempt at the sport was one of his favorite stories to tell about his wife.
During his annual family trip to a lakeside campground in Raystown, Pennsylvania, Hollins was in his senior year when he brought Lloyd with him. On a grassy bank, Hollins and his family threw golf balls and drove them across the lake.
Still drenched from a swim, his wife was clad in a bikini and insisted she could nail the 350m trek across the lake and make it to the other side. Laughing, Hollins shared:
“She just threw it – it sinks to the bottom of the lake, and we never find it. She was mortified. Which I found pretty hilarious. But that’s typical Carli. She still thinks she can do it. do. She’s so determined.”
The couple had been in a long-distance relationship for nearly 15 years
Since they didn’t live far from each other, Hollins remembers seeing his wife and playing football when they were younger, and she was the most competitive person he knew.
Hollins also played football in high school, and when his wife wasn’t playing club or country football, the couple liked to face off in neighborhood friendlies that often turned competitive. Hollins’ wife said:
“He’s laughing because he says I’m always going harder against him, and I’m like, ‘No, you’re always going harder against me. It gets hot. We will manage. You know, it’s fun, we’re kidding. We get out of the romantic relationship and we fight.”
While Lloyd was playing for clubs across the country, Hollins and his wife had a long-distance relationship for almost 15 years, he popped the question and surprised Lloyd with a cushion-cut engagement ring set on a diamond band at three branches.
The couple decided to postpone their wedding until after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Lloyd competed with the United States Women’s National Team after being named Player of the Year. FIFA 2015.

Their decision to delay their wedding gave Lloyd time to focus solely on his game. However, Hollins and his wife’s family were not with her at the international sporting event, as she explained:
“When you go solo it’s so much easier to focus – and Brian and my family understand that.”
Hollins grew up watching his wife play football and knew how good she was with a ball at her feet. So it was good to watch her perform in front of the world at a local bar in New Jersey.
Carli visited fashion shows to find this particular dress
In preparation for her 2016 wedding, Lloyd attended William Christopher’s Bridal Fashion Week in search of the perfect dress. She saw her fall 2016 collection and loved the “dramatic and unique” dresses.
It was her first bridal show, and since she and Hollins chose a beach wedding, the bride-to-be was determined to wear lace on the big day.
Lloyd was the opposite of a bridezilla; as long as her dress, hair and makeup looked good and her guests were having a good time, she had a relaxed approach to details such as wedding invitations. She added:
“A lot of people say it’s so stressful – it’s a fun part! Being able to plan, being able to buy things. Just enjoy it because it’s going to pass quickly, and it’ll be over in a heartbeat.”
Cali and Brian got married in Mexico
Hollins and Lloyd tied the knot on Friday, Nov. 4, in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. Their 75 guests were made up of their closest friends and family members as the intimate beachside ceremony unfolded along the scenic Riviera Maya.
Lloyd wore a strapless couture wedding dress from Matthew Christopher’s Fall 2016 collection while her five bridesmaids stood by her side in Amsale dresses by Bella Bridesmaids.
Hollins wore a silver/blue tuxedo with a white buttonhole and a pink tie. Before the big day, Hollins and his wife hired a photographer to take pictures of them in front of the serene seaside and the setting sun.
They are in love even decades later
Like Billy Joel, the Hollins wife took to social media to celebrate her fourth wedding anniversary with a black and white photo of the couple. In a heartfelt caption dedicated to him, his wife wrote:
“You are my rock, my biggest supporter, my best friend and your biggest competitor in sport.”
In November 2020, Lloyd reflected on the year as it drew to a close and shared that while it had been a tough year, it had been their most special anniversary yet.
The Olympian also honored his sixth wedding anniversary on Instagram. As she declared her love for Hollins, Lloy also shared that the couple have held each other together despite the ups and downs of their 22 years of marriage.
