‘Clippers and Cops’ helps bridge the gap between police and their communities

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – Clippers and Cops is a non-profit organization founded by Tyrone Dennis, a University of North Alabama (UNA) graduate and Atlanta police detective. Their goal is to unite the police with their communities.

Tyrone Dennis and his group visited and gave presentations in all schools in the city of Florence on Thursday September 22nd. During the presentation, the group explained to the students how a wrong decision can impact the rest of their lives.

“We don’t talk to them, we talk to them. And they are able to open up and respond to us,” Dennis said. “This is how we make them realize that their actions can be disastrous.”

Dennis told News 19 the organization started in barbershops, hence the name “Clippers and Cops.” Dennis said he invited gang members, community leaders and other residents to share their opinions and understand each other’s points of view.

He also said they often talk about how the police interact with their communities and how they can improve their relationship with residents.

“When people say ‘what is police reform?’ I say we “we are police reform”. It takes everybody coming together to have those dialogues,” Dennis said.

The group will also be at the Cutting Edge Barber Shop in Sheffield from 6pm to 8pm on September 22. The public is invited to come and ask questions and share their own opinions.
