Commission outlines plans to ban Russian gold imports – POLITICO

The European Commission on Friday adopted plans to ban imports of Russian gold into the 27 EU countries, preparing the sanctions to be approved by ambassadors from member countries next week.

The proposal is part of a new ‘maintenance and alignment’ package which also aims to introduce stricter reporting requirements for freezing the assets of sanctioned persons and to strengthen export controls on dual-use items and technology peak, according to a Commission press release.

The text itself has not yet been published.

According to several diplomats, EU foreign ministers will discuss the plans on Monday. The ambassadors to the EU will then be able to adopt it during their meetings on Wednesday or Friday.

The package is likely to pass without major problems, although last-minute hiccups cannot be ruled out, several EU diplomats told POLITICO.

The new plans also include imposing sanctions on more individuals and entities, according to the press release.
