Nigel Havers has revealed he didn’t watch The Crown because he didn’t want to “get upset”.

The actor, 71, – who was close friends with the late Princess Diana – said he didn’t think the Netflix series was ‘accurate’ and said it shouldn’t be confused with real life .

During an appearance on Loose Women on Thursday, Nigel also revealed the funny comment Prince William and Kate made to him after watching him at the panto with their three young children Louis, Charlotte and George.

Speaking about The Crown on the daytime show, he said: “It’s a TV show, don’t confuse it with real life and it’s entertaining yes.”

‘I don’t think it’s accurate, but it’s a huge success. I didn’t watch it because I don’t want to get upset.

Nigel was once close to Diana – played by Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown – and once said of her: “I was good friends with Diana”. She was a charming woman. I just used to meet her at various things.

“I was not one of her lovers. I don’t think she was after me and she didn’t get me. But I felt sorry for her because she was depressed. She felt trapped in this relationship.

“I don’t think Charles knew how to handle this. He was in love with someone else, as it turned out.

Nigel has been doing pantomime for 17 years and this year is back at the London Palladium for Jack and the Beanstalk alongside Dawn French, Alexandra Burke and Julian Clary.

During the conversation, he revealed that Prince William and Kate had come to see him with their three children.

Next, Nigel revealed that William shared a joke with him about some of the rude two-way jokes that panto is famous for.

He said: ‘Will and Kate came over last year and he said to me afterwards ‘I have some explaining to do when I get home’ after all the double meaning jokes.

“The kids didn’t understand why Will was laughing at times!”

He added about his role in pantos in general: “It’s my seventeenth year! When I started, I had no gray hair!

‘This year I’m playing myself – King Nigel in the current. It’s a great cast, Dawn French is back, Julian Clary is even more rude to me than before!’

The £2million star-studded production is currently underway at the London Palladium.

The story is that The Spirit comes to the aid of Jack’s mother, Dame Trott (Dawn French), who must sell her cow, Pat (Rob Madge), to pay the giant’s henchwoman, Mrs Blunderbore (Alexandra Burke) , then help rescue King Nigel (Nigel Havers) from the Giant’s Castle.

Ahead of the series of shows, Dawn said: ‘Roll up! Roll up! Lots of cheer and happiness and cheeks and cheeks will be performing on stage at the Palladium this Christmas with finally a brand new Panto!

“We’ve waited two years to bring you Jack and The Beanstalk and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. See you there folks!

Marking a return to pantomimes after two years of Pantoland, the festive West End treat will run from December 10 to January 15.

French back to our panto, and I look forward to working with Julian, Paul, Nigel and Gary on what promises to be our biggest show yet!

“Jack and The Beanstalk marks the return of a full-scale show to our Palladium Christmas season, and we’ve been working on new designs for the show over the past two years.”

Alongside Harrison, the creative team also includes choreographer Karen Bruce, set designer Mark Walters, costume designer Hugh Durrant, lighting designer Ben Cracknell and sound designer Gareth Owen. The composition and orchestrations are by Gary Hind.
