With every intention of bringing football home, Mason said his schedule was far too busy for women, although he sometimes goes out with him, when he “comes to London”.

Adding his England team-mates, he explained: “We want to win. And with the squad we have, we can definitely do that. I feel like we’re on the right track. We want to make the nation proud.

It comes as Chelsea boss Graham Potter is surprised Mason is splitting opinion and believes the love his in-form star has for football, Chelsea and his teammates is the key to what makes him so good.

Potter is the latest manager to fall in love with Mount, joining Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate in quickly making the attacking midfield a key part of his plans.

Mount is the only outfield player to start in all six of Potter’s games so far and responded by rediscovering his best form, with the player scoring his first Chelsea goals of the season in Sunday’s win at Aston Villa.

He has won the Blues Player of the Season award for the past two seasons but still has his doubters, and has faced accusations of being a ‘teacher’s pet’ for club and country.

Ahead of Wednesday night’s trip to Brentford, Potter said: ‘It’s surprising that I’ve been getting a few questions about mixed opinions on Mason. I find it strange, especially from the outside.

“Every time we played against Chelsea you were always concerned about Mason. And then when you start working with him, he has everything you need to be a top player. Great attitude, understands spaces, can execute assists, score goals, so he’s on top.

Asked about Mount’s secret factor, Potter replied, “You probably can’t measure love, can you?” I would say the love of the game, the love of his teammates, the love of the club. He loves playing football. It’s his personality as much as his football ability.
