Former Chinese Justice Minister Fu Zhenghua has been sentenced to death for corruption and abuse of power, state media reported on Thursday, adding that the sentence would be commuted to life imprisonment after two years.
Prosecutors convicted Fu of using his authority as the country’s top public security official to exchange favors for gifts and cash worth about 117 million yuan ($17.3 million). dollars). The disgraced civil servant served as justice minister from 2018 to 2020 after a long career in law enforcement and the security services. He had also led several major corruption investigations. He fell into suspicion in October, accused of “serious violations of discipline and national laws.”
Three former provincial police chiefs were also sentenced earlier this week, accused of both corruption and disloyalty to President Xi Jinping. All, including Fu, are believed to have been part of a rival faction led by former top security official Sun Lijun, who is awaiting sentencing for taking bribes, manipulating the securities market and owning illegal firearms.
Xi has made cracking down on corruption a cornerstone of his rule since assuming the country’s highest office in 2012.
