Florence Pugh and Zach Braff have broken up

We’re used to learning about celebrity breakups through “anonymous insiders,” spokespersons, or Instagram posts. So I wasn’t prepared to find out that Florence Pugh and Zach Braff broke up “earlier this year” via an in-depth profile in Harper’s Bazaar. Pugh told the magazine that she found all the media attention surrounding her relationship overwhelming, so they didn’t want the whole world watching when it ended as well.

“We tried to do this separation without the world knowing, because it’s a relationship that everyone has an opinion on,” she said. “We just thought something like this would really give us the advantage of not having millions of people telling us how happy they are that we’re not together. So we did that. I automatically get a lump in my throat when I talk about it.

Pugh and Braff’s relationship had drawn unsolicited criticism during its nearly 4-year run, mostly due to their 20-year age gap. (Pugh is 26 and Braff is 47.) “I don’t need you telling me who I should and shouldn’t love,” Pugh told Haters in a video (via Complex). “I would never, ever, ever tell someone in my life that they can and cannot love.”

The couple were first linked in 2018 after meeting on the set of the short film In the time it takes to get there.

To Bazaar, Florence Pugh said, “I don’t think people, just because they have this job, that every aspect of their life should be monitored and written down. We didn’t sign up for a reality TV show.
