High school student sets the record straight for black Civil War vet

Buried under a weathered headstone at Milltown Rural Cemetery in Brewster, New York, is Pvt. Francis “Frank” Oliver Myers, a black Union soldier who fought with Massachusetts’ famed 54th Infantry during the Civil War.

For more than 130 years, historical records have shown that Myers was from Paterson, New Jersey. But a senior at Brewster High School, Ellen Cassidy, who passes Myers’ grave every day, discovered that her real hometown was Patterson, New York.
