How did Julie Andrews become the voice of Lady Whistledown in “Bridgerton?”

Julie Andrews’ “Bridgerton” character, Lady Whistledown, is Penelope Featherington’s alter ego. However, not all viewers may have guessed that Andrews is the voice behind the character.

When Julia Quinn’s best-selling romance novels were announced to have Netflix adaptations via the “Bridgerton” series, fans of the book had high expectations.

After its premiere, “Bridgerton” has become one of the most popular shows on the streaming platform, featuring talented actors and actresses in the industry.

Phoebe Dynevor, Rege-Jean Page and Nicola Coughlan are just a few of the stars who have appeared on the show. Hollywood icon Julie Andrews also had a special role in “Bridgerton,” though some viewers might not immediately recognize her.

Only avid fans of the actress recognized Andrews’ voice as the narrator, Lady Whistledown, of the popular series. Lady Whistledown, the person who knows all the outrageous rumors and truths, keeps her identity a secret until the end. Showrunner Chris Van Dusen said:

“We offered her the part, sent her the scripts, not thinking anything would really come out of it, but amazingly she read the scripts and fell in love with it.”

Unlike other cast members, “The Sound of Music” star didn’t have to travel overseas to fulfill her role. Van Dusen added:

“We did all of our sessions virtually with her. I was in LA, and we were able to do it via Zoom. It was so much fun working with her. Whatever you think Julie Andrews is, she is. is.”

He revealed how fun it was to write the script for Lady Whistledown because her character can say the most “scathing” and “insulting” things. “These are not typical things that you would think would come out of Julie Andrews’ mouth,” he added.

Lady Whistledown is a witty columnist who leaves her posts anonymously. She is also the best friend of Eloise, in love with Colin Beidgerton.

Andrews’ character is undoubtedly an interesting woman, whom the actress described as “sharp-tongued.” The ‘Princess Diaries’ star said:

“[She is] a Tartar, a bit of an ugly woman.”

Although she doesn’t actually appear onscreen, Andrews sees her character as the instigator of the drama. Through her columns, Lady Whistledown can control the reactions of those around her and drive mayhem. She says:

“I can make or break anyone, it seems, if I want to.”

The identity of Lady Whistledown is later revealed as Penelope Featherington (Nicole Coughlan), the title character of the highly anticipated Season 3. Penelope’s love affair with Colin will be centered on the series, as well as her discovery of his alter ego.

Although their relationship was rocky and trust issues arose, the book ended with the couple getting married. However, only time can tell if the same ending will be seen in the series.
