JOHN CAZALE WAS MERYL STREEP’S FIRST GREAT LOVE

John Holland Cazale, born August 12, 1935, only made five feature films in his lifetime, but they’re all classics. Prior to his film debut, the actor had won numerous Obie Awards for his stage performances.

In 1962 he starred in “The American Way”, but it wasn’t until ten years later that he played Fredo Corleone “The Godfather” and reprized his role in “The Godfather Part II”.

Between 1974 and 1978, the actor, who often played depressed characters, starred in “The Conversation”, “Dog Day Afternoon” and “The Deer Hunter”. All of the films he appeared in were nominated for Best Picture, and three of them won the Best Picture Oscar.

Cazale met Streep in 1976 when they starred together in “Measure for Measure,” a production of Shakespeare in the Park, and although he wasn’t a star yet, they instantly connected.

Although they are 14 years older than her, Cazale and Streep started living together. streep said:

“He was unlike anyone I had ever met. It was his uniqueness, his kind of humanity and his curiosity for people, his compassion.”

Unfortunately, their love, which made them the envy of the New York theater world, was short-lived. In May 1977, Cazale was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

THE DEATH OF JOHN CAZALE HAS MET MERYL AND HER HUSBAND DON GUMMER

Shortly after Cazale’s death, Streep was kicked out of their shared home. As she was packing her things, her brother Harry came to help her, but he was not alone. He went with his sculptor friend Don Gummer who quickly offered him accommodation while he traveled out of the country.

Although not ready for a serious relationship, Gummer and Streep kept in touch by mail, and on September 30, 1978, they were married in her parents’ backyard. More than four decades later, Gummer is still supportive and supportive of Streep in his career.

The couple welcomed four children: Henry, Mamie, Grace and Louisa. Henry is a musician, Mamie and Grace have followed in Streep’s footsteps and are actresses, while Louisa is a model.
