Jonah Hill puts his sanity before red carpet events

In Hollywood, the job isn’t just about showing up on set and performing; it’s also to promote the tv series or movie once it’s finished which involves going from a red carpet event to an interview and a party and it’s expected to overflows with charm all the time. Sure, movie stars get paid more for their time than, well, most jobs, but it’s easy to see how a lifetime of such obligations could become damaging. This is what actor Jonah Hill communicated in a recent open letter published in Deadline, saying he would no longer promote his films out of concern for his mental health.

“I understand that I have spent nearly 20 years experiencing anxiety attacks, which are exacerbated by media appearances and public events,” Hill wrote, adding, “I generally recoil from letters or statements like this, but I understand that I am one of the privileged few who can afford to take time off. I will not lose my job working on my anxiety. With this letter and with stutz– Hill’s next documentary on mental health – “I hope it will be more normal for people to talk and act on this stuff.

Jonah Hill has been candid about his mental health journey before, taking to Instagram last October to ask people to stop sharing opinions about his recent weight loss (and, indeed, refrain from commenting on his body in any way, because he wants to “politely let you know that it’s not helpful and it doesn’t do you any good”). Hopefully his way of speaking will help set a new normal of honesty and accurate self-reflection within the industry.
