King Charles III accomplished a lot as a senior member of the royal family, but being a grandfather remains one of his most treasured accomplishments. The monarch takes care of her grandchildren and even named her garden after one of them. Here’s a look at Her Majesty’s relationship with her grandchildren, who call her a special nickname.

King Charles III, King of England, is undoubtedly one of the most active members of the royal family. But no matter how busy his schedule is, the 73-year-old always makes time for his grandchildren.

Even before they were born, King Charles always looked forward to becoming a grandfather, which he considered very important. Indeed, the King of England had virtually no relationship with his grandparents.

King Charles’ maternal grandfather, King George VI, died as an infant in 1952, while his paternal grandfather, Prince Andrea of Greece, died before even his birth.

As a result, King Charles had no memories of his grandparents and did not want the same for his grandchildren.

For him, grandparents encouraging their grandchildren and showing them things to take care of were great.

King Charles’ thoughts on being a grandfather

On December 3, 2012, Prince William and Kate Middleton made headlines when they announced they were expecting their first child and royal heir. The audience was thrilled with the good news, but it was nothing compared to King Charles’s excitement.

Three days later, the King of England opened up about finally becoming a grandfather at the launch of the 2012 Antarctica Winter Crossing Expedition in London.

He told reporters the idea of welcoming a grandchild into his old age was “pleasant”, adding that it was “wonderful” and he was “thrilled”.

A few months after King Charles’ confession, the Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed their first child, Prince George, to St Mary’s Hospital in London.

Shortly after the baby’s arrival, the monarch and his wife visited the newborn and his parents in the hospital. A YouTube video on The Royal Family Channel captured King Charles and the Queen Consort leaving hospital with big smiles. Indeed, it was a momentous moment for the royal family, and the public was sure to share in their joy.

Another clip shared on YouTube showed King Charles and the Queen Consort exchanging pleasantries with several people offering words of congratulations. From the look on the monarch’s face, he was overwhelmed with happiness.

After the birth of Prince George, it became a priority for King Charles to do better, to avoid passing on a dysfunctional world to his grandchildren, especially George, the royal heir.

The monarch had always thought about George’s future before he was born, but became more critical of King Charles after his arrival.

Constant thoughts about his grandson’s future prove King Charles’ love for Prince George. The monarch again proved her love by naming the gardens of her Highgrove home, which is her happy place, after her first grandson.

King Charles noted that the beautiful garden was once an empty field, but as a nature lover he decided to plant trees and flowers there on the day Prince George was born, hence the name Prince George’s Wood or Prince George’s Garden.

King Charles’ link to Prince George

First birthdays are a big party with lots of amazing gifts; for Prince George, it was no different. When the young prince recorded one in 2014, he received a very impressive gift from King Charles. According to a report by the Mirror, the expensive gift was a Wendy showroom worth £18,000.

Housed at the King’s residence in Highgrove, the playhouse is furnished with a stove and a small bed and is large enough to accommodate George and his siblings.

The Playhouse was built by Plankbridge and given to George as a token of gratitude to King Charles for the constant support they had received from him.

Hearing her grandchildren call her “Grandpa Wales”, an echo of Queen Elizabeth’s relationship with her grandfather King George V, whom she called “Grandpa England”, was delightful.

A year later, for George’s second birthday, the doting grandfather turned part of Prince George’s garden into a playground for the little royals.

According to a royal source, before the transformation, the King of England had a picnic with George in the garden, with plastic cups.

King Charles gave his grandson a tour of the garden and the Wendy House which he gave George for his first birthday. A few years later, reports surfaced that George had become a regular at the garden.

The young prince had followed in his grandfather’s gardening footsteps. According to King Charles, George helped him plant a tree or two in the garden.

King Charles’ relationship with his grandchildren

George had grown rapidly a few years after his birth. In 2017, the young prince became a freshman and his proud grandfather made sure to be present on this important day. During an interview that day, King Charles was asked if he had given advice to George, and he jokingly replied:

“Of course not. He wouldn’t take it away from me, I don’t think, at that age.”

Shortly after George started school, the young prince became a big brother for the second time, after the birth of his younger brother and his parents’ third child, Prince Louis.

With the arrival of Louis, King Charles became a grandfather of three children and settled down. Although it got rowdy every time the trio was there, it was worth it.

Hearing her grandchildren call her “Grandpa Wales”, an echo of Queen Elizabeth’s relationship with her grandfather King George V, whom she called “Grandpa England”, was delightful.

A few years later, things might not be the way they were. King Charles is now the reigning monarch following the death of his mother on September 8, 2022.

That means he’ll take on new responsibilities and won’t have much time to focus on what really interests him, including his environmental and charitable pursuits.

However, he is optimistic that important tasks will continue in the trusted hands of others. As King Charles has said before, he hopes George will follow in his footsteps and continue his work with nature, as he has a lot of experience.
