Maks Chmerkovskiy’s wife Peta Murgatroyd suffered third miscarriage in 2 years while fleeing war

“Dancing With The Stars” alums Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd have been together for years. And even though their fairytale romance was marred by tragedy – including three miscarriages – they chose to weather the storms together. Follow their journey.

Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd first met in 2009 during a Broadway production of “Burn The Floor.” However, it wasn’t love at first sight as Murgatroyd thought Chmerkovskiy was arrogant.

She would later admit that she was wrong about him after realizing how generous he was to the entire cast. From there, their friendship began to grow.

Two years later, their paths crossed again after Murgatroyd joined Chmerkovskiy on “Dancing With The Stars,” where he had been a professional dancer since 2006.

There had always been an attraction between the two, but they were seeing other people at the time. Murgatroyd was dating future DWTS costar Damian Whitewood while Chmerkovskiy was engaged to fellow DWTS professional dancer Karina Smirnoff.

As fate would have it, they ended up single in 2012 and began to build a solid friendship. They started with “friendship dates” and eventually went Instagram official the same year.

Less than a year later, in November 2013, the couple out of the blue shocked fans when they broke up, with Murgatroyd telling People:

“My heart was broken.”

She says that on her way to the airport after their breakup conversation, he asked her why she was bringing all her clothes and bags. When she said it was because they broke up, she realized he didn’t want the breakup to last forever.

On the other hand, Chmerkovskiy immediately realized that breaking up with Murgatroyd was a mistake, so he took every opportunity he had to hang out with her.

The couple remained separated for almost a year and even saw other people during their separation, but in October 2014 they reconciled and rekindled their old flame. To seal their relationship, the professional dancers got engaged on December 5, 2015, during an episode of DWTS. Chmerkovskiy confessed to him:

“I am in love with you, and I will be in love with you for the rest of my life.”

More good news expected. After months of posting beautiful maternity photos on Instagram and documenting her pregnancy journey, Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy welcomed their son Shai Aleksander on January 4, 2017. They announced the beautiful news with a statement saying:

“It is, without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to us!”

Six months later, the lovebirds tied the knot at City Hall, in an intimate ceremony, and then again at Oheka Castle on Long Island, New York. Murgatroyd’s father walked the bride dressed in a fairytale ballgown down the aisle while Val, Chmerkovskiy’s brother, acted as best man.

Caught in a war

The couple have been going from strength to strength ever since and did not experience significant turmoil in their relationship until February 2022. Chmerkovskiy, a citizen of Ukraine, was in his home country as a judge for the “World of Dance” competition series when Russian forces invaded Ukraine. February 24.

His accommodation was two blocks from the parliament building, which came under siege after Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Murgatroyd recalls:

“So he was literally there, in the center of Kyiv. And, you know, sometimes he was like, ‘Don’t call me, don’t call me. They have to turn off the lights. Windows closed, no television, [Russian troops are] coming.'”

Murgatroyd says that during the eight to nine days her husband was in Ukraine, she thought he would die because he was trapped in Kyiv.

Chmerkovskiy was frantic as he packed his bags, but luckily traveled to neighboring Poland by train before heading back to California.

After the outbreak of war, Murgatroyd pleaded with her fans to send prayers to her husband and shared how scared and overwhelmed she felt.

Fortunately, the two reunited on March 2 after Chmerkovskiy arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The pair were spotted sharing an emotional embrace during their reunion, which Murgatroyd called “crazy” due to the amount of press present. She wrote:

“I’ve never hugged him so tightly. Trembling and still grateful. Now is the time to heal. We can’t go back to normal. Our lives have changed forever. We have a new normal, and that go.”

In a recent interview with People, Murgatroyd opened up about her fertility journey and her two miscarriages. She remembers when she had her first miscarriage in the fall of 2020 in a Whole Foods bathroom.

She was five months pregnant, and even though she tried to convince herself that everything would be okay, she knew deep down that she had lost her baby. She’s calling back :

“With the trauma, I took a very long time to get over it. It was months and months of crying most nights in bed by myself, crying in the shower. It was a lot of denial. Qu did I do wrong?”

However, nine months later she discovered she was pregnant again and was thrilled to fly to New York to meet Chmerkovskiy and surprise him with the news. Unfortunately, a few days before her departure, she had another miscarriage.

The lovebirds thought they were out of the woods, but in October 2021, Murgatroyd was in hospital, after being loaded into an ambulance by a team of medics at her Malibu home.

When she came to after collapsing in her son’s bedroom, she made a 911 call. A few days earlier, she had tested positive for the coronavirus.

She was entirely devoid of bodily strength and could not even feed her son. But when her breath started to fail, she knew she had to act. At the hospital, she called her husband, who was in Ukraine.

Chmerkovskiy thought he heard the doctor say his wife was pregnant on the phone, but before she and her husband could celebrate, the doctor told her she had lost the baby. It was the third time she had miscarried in two years, which was devastating.

The couple had a rough few years and after their three miscarriages; they now work with a team of fertility doctors. They have already started the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and hope that they will soon become parents again.

They are also more open about fertility issues. Chmerkovskiy says he is beyond proud of his wife for speaking out on the issue that affects many people around the world but is rarely discussed. They hope to encourage all those who are going through the same situation as them.
