Marie Osmond was planning to visit her son before he died at 18 – In their last conversation

Singer Marie Osmond has enjoyed her career and her large family. So it was a heartbreaking loss when one of her sons died days after talking on the phone and planning to meet.

Along with working her busy schedule with music and acting, “Love Me For A Reason” singer Marie Osmond has mothered eight children with Steve Craig and ex-husband Brian Blosil.

Three of the eight – Stephen, Jessica Marie and Rachael Laure – are biologically hers. The other five, Brandon Warren, Brianna Patricia, Abigail Olive May, Matthew Richard and Michael Blosil, are adopted.

Despite the many accolades she has won over the years due to her successful music and acting career, Osmond still considers motherhood her most notable achievement.

As difficult as motherhood is, it has always been equally rewarding for the singer. However, despite her view of her close-knit family and her children growing up with many siblings, one of her children felt lonely and never fitted in.

Michael Blosil joined the Osmond-Blosil family when they adopted him days after he was born. Her biological mother was a single teenager and the pregnancy was unplanned. Tragically, her father had perished in a car accident before she was born.

When Michael was 13, his birth mother tracked down Osmond’s house, and there was no denying that she was his mother. Their facial features matched so much that it was obvious she was telling the truth.

She said she didn’t want to interfere and was there to see Michael and make sure he was okay. While Osmond and her husband were reluctant to allow her to see him at first, Michael and the other children entered the room from the playroom where they were watching television.

Osmond decided she would introduce him to his biological mother, and Michael could already tell who she was due to the similarities in their traits. They talked for over an hour as the woman recounted the journey of pregnancy and childbirth.

Although she left an address and phone number, the flowers Michael sent her were not delivered and her phone number appeared disconnected because her calls did not go through. She had moved and left no forwarding address.

Years later, the woman would admit to Osmond that she wanted to let them live their life with Michael without interfering. She confessed that she had had a difficult life, and Osmond would later praise her for choosing to give up on Michael, giving her a better opportunity in life.

Growing up, Michael always seemed to distance himself from the rest of his siblings. After enjoying being the baby of the family for four and a half years, he had to adjust to new siblings arriving less than a year apart.

Between his mother working long hours and his older siblings spending most of their time on their rigorous schedules after school, Michael constantly felt alone. Unfortunately, feelings of loneliness followed him into adulthood.

One day he called his mother, saying he felt he had no friends. However, his roommate and new best friend from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, where he was a freshman, assured Osmond that Michael had never spent a single evening alone. He was still with the group.

Osmond could tell something was wrong with his son and was afraid of the change in his voice on the phone. He looked disappointed and tired and was emotionally depressed.

She thought his studies were weighing him down, or maybe the girl he liked didn’t like him back. Osmond said she would buy him a plane ticket to Vegas, where she worked, so they could talk, but Michael refused, saying he didn’t want to miss any more class.

Osmond then offered to fly to Los Angeles the following Monday, his day off, so they could have lunch and talk about what was going on. She recalled:

“I told him, I said, ‘Mike, I’ll be there Monday, and it’ll be fine.’ But the depression doesn’t wait until Monday.”

Osmond was going to retire for the night after leaving a friend’s daughter’s wedding. She had just arrived in her hotel room alongside her daughter Rachel when her phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number and let it go to voicemail.

However, no one left a message. When the same thing happened several more times, she decided to pick it up, pretty sure it was a wrong number. When she answered, it was the guard at the gate of her neighborhood who said there were policemen there to see her.

He also told her that they were accompanied by an officer from the coroner’s office. When they found out she was not home, they came to her hotel with the sad news that Michael had committed suicide on February 26, 2010, aged just 18.

Osmond would later tell Larry King that his son had adoption issues and had completed and signed a legal form legally changing his name from Blosil to Bryan.

Michael’s death has deeply shaken Osmond and his family. But it also left the ‘Inside The Osmonds’ star with unanswered questions, wondering if his decisions were the reason Michael took his own life.

In retrospect, Osmond felt that introducing Michael to his biological mother at such a tender age played a huge role in his troubles and wished they had been more careful, perhaps waiting until he was older.

Looking back, Osmond wonders what she might have said differently had she known the phone call was the last conversation she would ever have with her son. Her only consolation is that she never ended a conversation with her children without telling them she loved them.

Her advice today is to always listen to a mother’s intuition and never be too busy to listen and be with your children when your instincts tell you to because she felt that before her son died. She shared:

“Your life never gets better. There is no closure, and how can there be in a case like this when you can’t ask why.”

Osmond also reflected on her regrets, saying she had to get over the assumptions at some point because if she dwelled on it too much, she would have ceased to live. To cope, she returned to work and performed on stage, what she called her “safe place”.
