Mass shooter on Russian campus gets life in prison — RT Russia and the former Soviet Union

The 19-year-old previously admitted to killing six people in the university massacre last year

A court has sentenced Timur Bekmansurov, who was found guilty of carrying out a shooting at Perm City State University, to life in prison. The attack left six people dead and 47 injured, 23 of whom were shot and wounded.

The Perm Regional Court found that on September 20, 2021, Bekmansurov – then a freshman at the university – entered the campus with a gun and opened fire. The judge concluded that the 19-year-old posed a threat to society and should therefore spend the rest of his life in prison.

The decision comes after nearly four months of legal proceedings, during which relatives of the deceased and victims have demanded that Bekmansurov be sentenced to life imprisonment – a sentence also sought by the prosecution.

The young man will serve the first five years of his sentence in prison, and the rest in a penal colony with a special regime. In addition, he will also have to satisfy the claims of the families of the dead and injured and has promised to do so using his disability pension and the salary he will receive in the colony.

The defendant had previously admitted guilt for the crimes but requested a lighter sentence, pointing to a mental condition, his positive credentials from his place of residence and study, and his willing cooperation with the investigation. He also argued that he should not receive a maximum life sentence because of his disability – when arrested, Bekmansurov was shot below the knee and doctors had to amputate part of his left leg.

As the Perm regional news portal reported, during the hearing the judge referred to expert findings that Bekmansurov has a tendency to aloofness, manipulative behavior and suicide. They also concluded that he distrusted others and was emotionally cold. At the same time, they pointed out that the 19-year-old does not suffer from any psychological condition and has not been bullied by his peers or relatives.

Before committing the mass shooting last year, Bekmansurov issued a delayed message explaining his preparation for the heinous crime, stating that he dreamed of carrying it out by any means possible, and noting that his motivation was neither political nor political. religious and that he was not a terrorist.
