Jon Rahm fired a 10-under 61 round to sit two off leader Tony Finau heading into the final round of the Mexican Open

World No. 1 Jon Rahm moved within two strokes of Mexico Open leader Tony Finau after a sensational, bogey-free round of 61 under 10 on Saturday.

Rahm birdied six in the first eight holes alone, while four more followed on the back nine at Vidanta Vallarta. The Masters champion is aiming for a fifth victory in 2023.

An eagle on the 18th would have seen the Spaniard shoot 59 but unfortunately he found an even bunker and was left with a par after missing a birdie putt from long range.

Despite Rahm’s third-round heroism – his 61 set a new course record and was the lowest score of his career – he still trails halfway behind leader Finau by two after the American himself- even carded an impressive six under 65.

Finau bogeyed the 17th, his only blip of the round, to briefly hold just a one-shot advantage over Rahm and Akshay Bhatia – tied for second at 17 under – but a birdie, his fifth in the last seven holes, brought the world No. 16 back to 19 under and saw him regain his two-stroke cushion for Sunday.

Brandon Wu, who was in Saturday’s final duet with Finau, having started day one on top, is fourth heading into the final round after a four-under 67 to sit 16-under.

Will Gordon is three strokes behind, while day one leader Austin Smotherman is 12 under, just ahead of Erik van Rooyen, Andrew Putnam and Eric Cole in a three-under tie at 11 under.

Who will win the Mexican Open? Watch the final live on Sky Sports. Early coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Sky Sports Golf before full coverage from 6 p.m.
