Milwaukee set to host 2024 Republican National Convention, pending final approval

Milwaukee beat Nashville in Friday’s selection vote. Nashville’s bid to host the convention hit a snag last Tuesday when two city council members pulled the draft agreement to host the convention off council’s agenda at the last minute.

In the run-up to the panel’s vote, Wisconsin media, including the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Grandstand and Marshfield News-Herald took to Twitter to lobby for Milwaukee, citing Politifact Wisconsin’s finding that “Milwaukee hotels and restaurants would benefit from RNC visitors, despite community concerns.”

The choice of location is important to the GOP, given Wisconsin’s reputation as a flagship state. President Biden has won Wisconsin by less than a percentage point in 2020. Wisconsin incumbent Republican Senator Ron Johnson, an ally of Donald Trump and a lightning rod for Democratic critics, announced in January that he would run for a third mandate.
