Miriam Margolyes has revealed she doesn’t watch The Crown because she thinks it’s ‘wrong’ for movies and TV shows to be made about people who are still alive.

The outspoken actress, 81, told My Weekly magazine that the royal family ‘shouldn’t have their lives turned into a soap opera’, after the Netflix series sparked controversy with its portrayal of the princess’s wedding Diana with her husband Charles.

Miriam, who also confessed to never having seen the sitcom Friends, said: “I don’t like to see the lives of people on television who are still alive.” I think that is completely wrong.

“I don’t watch The Crown and I feel very protective of the Royal Family.

“They shouldn’t have their life turned into a soap opera because they’re still living it.”

The Crown has portrayed the history of the Royal Family since Queen Elizabeth II married Prince Philip in 1947, but the show has faced a lot of backlash in recent weeks for sensational events.

With the previous two seasons of The Crown spanning the three decades before the 90s, the entire team was recast for the 13-year span of the fifth and sixth series from 1990 to 2003.

Spectacular! The outspoken actress has said the Royal Family “shouldn’t have their lives turned into a soap opera”, after the Netflix show’s fifth series sparked a backlash.

Focusing heavily on the fallout between Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, and King Charles (then Prince of Wales) as portrayed by West, the series presented a number of low points for the royal family.

Among them are the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, the controversial interview with the late royal Panorama and the infamous ‘tampongate’ phone call between the King and Queen Consort.

One of the most controversial aspects of the series is how it will address Diana’s death, with Netflix facing intense scrutiny over the decision to recreate Princess Diana’s last days, filming some scenes in Paris, where She died.

It followed accusations of insensitivity amid reports that the show will recreate the Paris car chase that resulted in Diana’s death and scenes of young Princes William and Harry following their mother’s coffin in a season future. The exact moment of the accident will not be indicated.

During her interview, Miriam also admitted that she had “never” seen the long-running sitcom Friends, which has been repeated regularly on television since it ended after 10 seasons in 2004, because she had not gotten along with one of the show’s hosts.

She said: ‘I’ve never seen Friends. Many years ago I lived in Los Angeles and a friend introduced me to Marta Kauffman and David Crane [‘Friends’ writers].

“I loved David and couldn’t stand Marta Kauffman, so I thought, ‘Damn, I’m not watching this. ‘

But one program that Miriam is a fan of is Call the Midwife because of its excellent writing and solid cast.

She said: ‘Call the Midwife’ is the number one show on UK TV and it’s not hard to see why.

“The characters and the actors who play them are superb, the scripts remarkable. The success of the series is in the scripts and the producers have a field day.

“The scripts are truthful and are about real people and real things that happened.”
