Mum learns her grandson with Down syndrome is dying and sings him a song as a final goodbye

A couple’s dream came true when they welcomed a baby boy into their family. However, years later, they suffered a devastating blow and had no idea how they would cope.

Many couples aspire to have children, but it’s not easy for everyone. A husband and wife had almost given up on their dream of having children when something miraculous happened.

They had a baby boy, and he meant the world to them! The couple couldn’t imagine life without him, but tragically they didn’t spend many years with their son.

THEIR MIRACLE BABY

Joanne Corry from Belfast, UK, and her husband John have spent a decade trying to raise their family. They weren’t successful for so long that the news of a pregnancy caught them off guard.

The parents were anxiously awaiting news of their precious child, and they couldn’t believe their worst nightmare was coming true.

Joanne and John turned 40 and had their happiest times as parents. Their son, Lucius, was born with Down syndrome and two holes in his heart. However, this never got in the way of him or his happiness.

HE GOT SICK ANY MOMENT

The little boy has developed well and even started his primary education at Harberton Special School in 2021. However, he felt unwell during a trip to Funtasia theme park in 2022. The mother shared :

“He just wasn’t himself. He didn’t want to go swimming. He fell asleep in the pram, and when he woke up I asked him if he was okay, and he told me said no.”

THEIR LIVES HAVE CRASHED

The family returned home, and after further disturbing symptoms, they took Lucius to the hospital. Staff at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children were ready to receive him and tried to save his life for 40 minutes.

The parents anxiously awaited news of their precious childand they couldn’t believe their worst nightmare was coming true.

Tragically, the medical team’s efforts failed and Lucius died. The heartbroken mum expressed:

“Our lives come from [fallen] a part. I don’t know how we’re going to manage without him.”

SHE SANG TO HER SON

The medical team cried with the broken parents and gave them alone time with their boy. Joanne wrapped her son in a blanket before singing her a song through her tears.

She knew their lives would never be the same again because their “lives revolved around Lucius”. The mom added:

“He brought our family so much closer. He was like a missing puzzle piece. He made us the happiest people when he came into the world. There was nothing holding that boy back. He was our little superhero. ”

TRIBUTE TO DOCTORS

Joanne was grateful for the “incredible” service at the hospital. She noted that the doctor was visibly devastated when he broke the terrible news of their son’s death.

Genuine care and concern meant the world to parents. Joanne shared: “The staff were amazing. They were up there crying, [heartbroken] when we had to let him go. I don’t know how they do it.” She added:

“[The medical staff] come to him. We held her hand. They left us with him so we could talk to him and tell him how much we loved him. We took him in our arms and kissed him.”

THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES

Parents would remember their son as the sweetest child. He was affectionate and spread joy wherever he went, always smiling and telling people he loved them.

John joked that his wife had her phone stuck to her hand. Now they were grateful because she had documented all the small and important milestones. They clung to the memories and would never forget their miracle baby boy.

SUPPORTING THEIR COMMUNITY

The family was extremely grateful for the love and kindness of community members, friends and strangers. In their time of devastation, they had people to rely on. Joanna said:

“We can’t thank people enough for the support they’ve shown us. People have been amazing, they can’t do enough. Our house is like a store with the amount of milk and tea bags we we were sent.”

A TRIBUTE TO LUCIUS

The baby boy’s funeral took place on August 12, 2022 and Joanne asked everyone in attendance to honor her son in a unique way. She wrote:

“We would like anyone attending the funeral to wear something pink as it was Lucius’ favorite color and his favorite color to say.”

Relatives have also shared their sadness online. Maura O’Neill said:We already miss you beyond belief, the most beautiful boy in the world. I’ve loved watching you grow over the past five years.”

The loss of a child is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a parent can have. Their hopes and dreams of seeing their precious little one grow up are swept away, and the pain of grief cuts them deep.

Parents need the support of family and friends to pick up the pieces and get on with their lives. It won’t be easy, but there’s always a reason to keep going.

Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Lucius’ family during this difficult time. RIP, little angel!
