OM overthrow Auxerre (2-1) and return to five points behind PSG

Terribly clumsy and a little unlucky, OM were led by Auxerre for a long time before forcing the lock and winning 2-1 on Sunday, which temporarily gives them a four-point lead over Lens, whom they will face in a week for a mouth-watering Champions League final. The final of the Coupe de France has slightly turned the schedule upside down and we will have to wait until Tuesday evening and the Toulouse-Lens match to know exactly how much lead OM can count on before going to challenge the Sang et Or at Bollaert. The gap will be at best four points, at worst only one, but OM will go north as the runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain.

For a long time, however, between the opening goal for Auxerre and the equalizer signed by Cengiz Under, all of Marseille thought of all the points lost at home, against Ajaccio, Strasbourg, Nice or Montpellier, as many teams which, like Auxerre, does not play in its category. But the team of Igor Tudor has the marrow and it did not give up, while the balls did not want to cross the line of Ionut Radu, the Auxerre goalkeeper, systematically slowed down, countered or blocked by a foot, a head or an opposing post. Already at the break, the statistics were quite telling: 75% possession for OM, 13 shots from three, 26 crosses from three and ten corners from nil. And yet, without even having put more than one foot in the Marseille area, it was Auxerre who were in front.

Champion pace

Because on the second time of a free kick moderately cleared by Pau Lopez, Birama Touré had placed the ball in the skylight with an exceptional volley from the right of more than 20 meters (1-0, 33rd). At that moment, Marseille had only let his opponent breathe for a few minutes, after an asphyxiating half hour. Fresh and committed, carried by the superb atmosphere of the Vélodrome, OM had done almost everything well and left Auxerre short of breath.

But Marseille could not score. Neither near nor far, nor on set piece, nor on mess, nor on constructed action. All of Tudor’s attacking players tried their luck, but it was Vitinha who had the best chances and was the most clumsy, with three excellent situations between the 15th and 20th minute.

“The result is acquired”

After the break, OM pushed again and the statistics swelled again. Auxerre suffered a siege and logically ended up laying down their arms, twice in quick succession. In the 75th minute, it was first Cengiz Under who with a nice cross shot opened the breach (1-1). And two minutes later, Alexis Sanchez, served at the limit of offside by Mattéo Guendouzi brought down the last Burgundian defenses.

With this third consecutive success, OM are continuing on their rhythm of champions which will (probably) not be and confirm that they have regained their legs and bite after a more neutral period. Above all, he is inflated with confidence before facing Lens. “It would make little sense to go to Lens without having a result,” Tudor judged on Friday. The result is certain and now everyone is impatient for Saturday. See you in Bollaert!
