Poland buys used US tanks after Germany snub — RT World News

Warsaw intends to use M1 Abrams main battle tanks to replenish its stockpile after sending weapons to Kyiv

Poland will buy 116 used M1 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States to fill the armored vehicles it had delivered to Ukraine.

Warsaw has reached an agreement on the issue with the White House, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak told Polish news agency IAR on Friday.

The agency said the first US-made tanks would be delivered early next year and would replace more than 240 Soviet-era T-72 tanks, which Poland transferred to Ukraine in April.

Poland initially hoped to replenish its stockpiles with German Leopard 2 tanks. But the expected deal did not materialize, after which Polish President Andrzej Duda in May accused Berlin of breaking his word.

Steffen Hebestreit, spokesman for the German government, said at the time that Berlin was “perplexed” by the allegations. He told reporters that Poland had requested the latest Leopard 2A7 tanks, but the German army itself had a relatively small number of these vehicles.

Record Military Spending Approved in the United States

In April, Poland and the United States signed a separate agreement for Warsaw to buy 250 new Abrams tanks.

Many Western countries, including EU countries, supplied Ukraine with heavy weapons after Russia launched a military operation against the neighboring state in late February.
