Rashid Khan has been confirmed to return as Afghanistan captain in the game’s shortest format following Mohammad Nabi’s resignation following a disappointing global T20 campaign. Rashid welcomed the appointment while acknowledging his responsibility to please Afghan fans.

It would be Rashid’s second time in charge of the team in the T20Is, having enjoyed a brief 7-game stint in 2019, although the all-rounder already holds the record of being the youngest captain in Test cricket history and One Day International.
The 24-year-old is often considered the best T20 player in the world and ranks second among bowlers in the ICC format rankings. Rashid’s rise to this role has come with huge praise from ACB President Mirwais Ashraf.
“Rashid Khan is a huge name in Afghan cricket. He has colossal experience in the format all over the world which will help him take the team to a new level in the format,” he said. at NDTV.
Rashid will take over after a disappointing World T20 Down Under campaign where rain reduced their chances of advancing on several occasions as they slumped in the group stage. The debacle was followed by Nabi’s resignation due to a disagreement with management and the selector in the preparation for the tournament as well as insufficient preparation.
“Rashid Khan has the experience of leading Afghanistan in all three formats before and we are happy to have him as skipper again for the T20I format. I am sure he will emerge victorious and bring more glories to the nation. ,” Ashraf added.
With 74 T20Is and 361 T20s under his belt, Rahid is already a very experienced campaigner at a young age and has been involved with the national team for the past seven years. He expressed confidence in his leadership skills as he prepares for his first assignment as captain in the new relay with a three-game T20I series against the United Arab Emirates.
“Captain is a huge responsibility. I have experience leading my country before, there is a good group of guys I have a good understanding with and I feel quite comfortable. We will try to sticking together, we will work hard to put things in the right direction and bring pride and joy to our country and our nation,” Rashid said upon his appointment.
