Mithun Manjunath vs. Nhat Nguyen

In another battle for the quarter-final spot, young Mithun Manjunath was knocked out by Nhat Nguyen of Ireland in 3 tough sets. The youngster got the better of Kidambi Srikanth on Wednesday but looked faded in the last 16 game today. He was completely dominated in the first game by Nguyen and the Irish won the first set 21-10.

In game two, Manjunath found his groove as he started to dominate game two. He led through the second set interval with the score at 11-8. He continued to maintain his lead in the game and never allowed his opponent to come back. He won the second game 21-18 and took the match in the decider. In game three, Nguyen made a comeback and he won it 21-16 to end Mithun Manjunath’s campaign.

HS Prannoy vs. Chou Tien Chen

For the second week in a row, India’s HS Prannoy overcame world No. 4 Chou Tien Chen by winning the second-round encounter 14-21, 22-20, 21-18. With the victory, he has now qualified for the quarter-finals.

In the first match, Prannoy was totally on his back as Chou Tien Chen dominated the entire match and won it 21-14. Also in game two, Prannoy struggled to control the game as he entered the break trailing three points as the scoreline read 8-11. The Indian commuter however made a comeback after fighting hard and managed to win the game 22-20 and took the game to decision.

Also in the deciding game, Prannoy was on the back foot until the interval when trailing by five points. As in the second set, he then fought back brilliantly and won GAME 3 by 21-18. Prannoy will now play Kodai NARAOKA from Japan which shocked 5th seed Jonathan Christie.

PV Sindhu vs Nguyen Thuy Lin

Indian Olympic medalist PV Sindhu beat Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh in the second round of the women’s singles category on Thursday.

Sindhu got off to a poor start, narrowly losing the opener. The Indian, however, kept her composure in the next two matches and won them. The match was hotly contested and lasted one hour and six minutes. Sindhu had reached the second round after defeating Belgium’s Lianne Tan 21-15, 21-11.

Ashmitha Chaliha vs. Han Yue

Ashmitha Chaliha created the flutter yesterday beating 7th seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand. But today she wrestled Han Yue from China.

Chaliha lost MATCH 1 by 21-9. The 19-year-old Indian did little better in 2nd but his inexperience at this level clearly showed. Chaliha finally lost 9-21, 13-21

Saina Nehwal vs. He Bing Jiao

Saina Nehwal is looking to make her first quarter-final of a tournament this year on the BWF Tour, but she faces a tough task as she will face fifth seed He Bing Jiao. He Bing Jiao defeated Phittayaporn Chaiwan in consecutive matches in the first round, while Saina Nehwal beat her compatriot Malvika Bansod 21-18, 21-14 in the first round. It will be the second meeting between the two players and Nehwal has a 1-0 lead against the Chinese.

Double

In men’s doubles, India’s Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun picked up a surprising victory over Malaysia’s sixth seed Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in the second round. After losing the first match 18-21, the Indian duo came back strong in the second match and managed to win it with a hard fight 24-22 to take the match into the deciding match. Also in the deciding third set, the Indian duo dominated the proceedings and won 21-18 to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

In women’s doubles, Pooja Dandu and Arathi Sunil, who received a first-round walover, will face sixth-seeded Cgin duo Du Yue and Li Wenmei.

Meanwhile, the mixed doubles pair of Nithin HV and Poorvisha Ram will face Mark Lamfuss and Isabel Lohau in the second round.
