THE BOSS NEEDED A KIDNEY TO SURVIVE

Debbie Stevens has worked hard to support her family and the 47-year-old single mother has always treated people with kindness and respect. In 2012, she displayed her concern for others when she decided to help her boss.

Stevens has learned that his 61-year-old boss, Jackie Brucia, has been battling a health issue. Brucia needed a kidney transplant or her chances of survival were slim.

SINGLE MOTHER DID NOT WANT HER BOSS TO DIE

The Long Island mother had worked as an office worker for billionaire Atlantic Automotive Group since 2009 and left the company a year later to move to Florida.

However, when she returned to her old branch, Stevens met Brucia and was moved by her story. She offered to help the woman and Brucia reportedly said:

“You never know, maybe I will have to accept this offer one day.”

In 2011, Brucia told Stevens her donor had been turned down, so she asked the employee about her previous offer and willingness to help. Stevens quickly intervened, hoping she could save her boss’s life. She said, “I didn’t want her to die.”

THE DONOR RECEIVED PAIN AFTER THE SURGERY

While Stevens wasn’t a perfect match for Brucia, the doctors allowed him to donate his kidney to someone else in the transplant group. In return, Brucia would go up on the waiting list and receive a kidney from a suitable match.

Stevens shared, “My kidney went to St. Louis, Missouri, and [Brucia’s] came from San Francisco.” After the operation, the employee faced immense pain, digestive issues and general discomfort –despite this, she felt compelled to return to work.

THE BOSS NEVER SAID THANK YOU FACE TO FACE

Stevens eventually returned to work, and when she called in sick three days after returning, she received an unexpected phone call. Brucia contacted her not to say thank you but to criticize her and yell at her.

The employee revealed that her boss only expressed her gratitude for the kidney through a brief email, in which she said, “thank you more than I can ever say.” However, she did not offer any in-person visits.

HIS PAIN WAS A ‘PERSONAL PROBLEM’

Stevens was shocked by the treatment she received and she took legal action against Brucia for the pain and suffering she suffered.

Brucia reportedly told her employee that any discomfort she faced was a “personal issue” and not a company concern. Stevens recalled:

“I was told not to get up from my desk, not to talk to people. It became very difficult to do my job.”

SHE FELT BETRAYED BY HER BOSS

According to Stevens, she was demoted and sent to another branch 50 miles away before being fired. He was also asked to leave the company due to poor performance. However, Stevens thought there was more to the story.

She considered the possibility that her boss had used her all along. The employee said she was “set up” to be a “backup plan” for Brucia, and the realization left her feeling ashamed and sickened.

Although she doesn’t regret donating her kidney, Stevens wouldn’t do it again. The disgruntled employee expressed:

“I feel very betrayed. It was a very painful and horrible experience for me. She just took that gift and put it on the floor and kicked it.”

THE BOSS HAS RUINED HIS LIFE

The woman’s former employer denied all allegations and said he treated Stevens fairly and honourably. One of their legal representatives, Robert Milman, added: ‘We hope this will be resolved favorably in the legal system.’

Brucia owed her life to the selfless mother of twobut instead of showing appreciation or gratitude, she ruined her employee’s life.

The loss of his job left Stevens in a vulnerable position in addition to his new health problems and expenses. Hopefully, justice would be done to the party that acted wrongly.

Questions to ponder:

  • Was the employee justified in taking legal action?

Brucia’s alleged actions left many in disbelief. The single mother incurred medical expenses as a direct result of the kidney donation, and so she sought legal action to ease her financial hardship.

  • Do you think the boss acted fairly when she fired the employee?

The reason for Stevens’ firing was related to his alleged poor performance. If there is evidence of this, the boss has the right to deal with the case and the employee. However, if there was no evidence of Stevens’ underperformance, the dismissal could be questioned.
