Spicy ‘Sunburnt’ blush is taking over TikTok – 14 products you’ll need to try it

When it comes to beauty trends, it’s no secret that TikTok has achieved almost legendary status as one of the biggest sources of inspiration for Gen-Z users. Trends come and go in record time; serving as a powerhouse for digital creators, consumers and brands. One of the most recognizable of these beauty trends (and perhaps the trend that has remained as influential as it was when it first appeared on the platform three summers ago), is the blush “coup de sun” composed of tanned skin and warm skin – toned makeup.

I spoke to celebrity makeup artist Edward Cruz, whose star client list includes Anna Wintour, Brooke Shields, Danai Gurira and Busy Phillips. “It’s a fun look that’s been doing well, three summers in a row,” Cruz says of the sun-kissed makeup look. “I think people love it because it’s easy to apply and anyone can wear it.” According to Cruz, to fully recreate this look, the focus should be on the glow. Using a bronzer, like Charlotte Tilbury’s Face Architect Glow Glide Highlighter (Cruz’s favorite) or a warm-toned blush is key to bringing it to life.

For applying highlighter or blush, Cruz has a thing for Smashbox’s popular Sheer Powder Brush, part of the brand’s Camera Ready Face, Eye, Brow, & Lip Brush collection. For a sun-kissed look, he recommends starting with light brush strokes at the highest point of one cheekbone, then sweeping the product across the face to the other. This quick and easy process also involves gently touching the bridge of the nose with the brush. Remember, you want to draw attention to the points on your face that would normally receive the sun’s rays to achieve that effortless, “I just lifted my chin into the sun” finish.

If you’re looking for inspiration, I highly recommend that you quickly browse the trending hashtag on TikTok or Instagram, paying particular attention to areas of the face that are warmer or brighter (makeup tutorials created by the users Rachel Shea and Lakeya Simone went viral). The sunburned blush trend is complementary for everyone, but looks especially gorgeous on deeper skin tones. I will always recognize this cream-based blush as the perfect terra cotta shade. A stroke of the product on my cheekbones, my temples and the bridge of my nose brings so much life to my face. As the weather warms up, it’s become a go-to step in my makeup routine.

Sheer yet buildable blushes are also a fun way to add a natural pop of color to any makeup look. Rush is my favorite suggested shade for Nars Air Matte Sheer Cream Blush because it’s not quite pink or orange; more of a dusty tangerine.

On days when I crave a pop of color, you’ll catch me reaching for Glossier’s Cloud Paint Gel Cream Blush in Dawn (a vibrant orange shade that looks beyond gorgeous on my skin). It’s also super pigmented and easy to blend; so a little goes a long way with this one.

I always love a good multitasking product that gives my makeup the perfect finishing touch while cutting down on time. Jouer Cosmetics’ recent release of their Blush & Bloom Cheek + Lip duo as part of their Cote d’Azur line has been one of my favorites lately.

When has Bobbi Brown ever let us down? The brand’s Pot Rouge Blush has been one of my go-to products for quite some time. but I’m particularly drawn to the Fresh Melon shade when creating an effortless sun-kissed look.

An easy way to bring a touch of warmth to the skin? Choose a cinnamon red shade for the cheeks and lips. Ilia’s Multi-Stick Cream Blush + Highlighter + Lip Tint in Dreamer is truly what dreams are made of as it’s semi-sheer yet buildable.

Olive skin tones look sublime in this shade of Cloud Paint Gel Cream Blush from Glossier. It’s a dusty pink, almost bordering on mauve. If you go for more pink makeup than orange, this is the blush for you.

The Jouer Cosmetics Powder Blush Duo Palette has everything you need to recreate the viral TikTok look with two blushes: one in a rose-pink shade and the other in a spicy orange shade. Are you feeling daring? Try layering the two shades together.

According to Cruz, using a warm-toned blush can add just the right amount of radiance. This bareMinerals product is an all-in-one bronzer and blush; which makes adding a wash of sunny color and a hint of shine easier than ever.

Add dimension to your look with this blush from RMS Beauty. While I think any of the shades offered for this blush would work well to recreate the blush trend, Maiden’s Blush shade is the perfect blend of sweet cinnamon and rose.

Pat McGrath’s Powder Blush in Desert Orchid is my pick for the best orange-pink powder blush shade. I love using it as both a blush and a highlighter, focusing my attention on my cheekbones and the tip of my nose to add color.

Although I’ve always considered myself a fan of cream blushes, Haus Labs Color FuseTalc Talc-Free Powder Blush may have changed my mind. Not only are all of the shades super pigmented, they’re easy to blend for the softest, most natural face color.

Whether you’re trying out the viral TikTok blush look and are just looking for an orange blush that works well with dark skin tones, this Nars blush should be on your radar. The Savage shade is a bubbly cinnamon shade; bringing both shine and color wherever it is placed. people blessed with melanin; it is our holy grail!

I will never pass up an opportunity to wear a peach cheek. The Gen Nude Powder Blush in That Peach Tho looks gorgeous on all skin tones and will keep your cheeks flushed and your overall makeup looking fresh. It’s a win-win!
