Taiwan accuses China of ‘exaggerated tricks’ – RT World News

Defense officials have denied the claim that Chinese planes flew near the Penghu Islands, saying Beijing was using ‘cognitive warfare’

Taiwanese defense officials have called China’s latest slashings over US politicians’ visits to the self-governing island as “cognitive warfare” saying that Beijing has exaggerated the proximity of its latest military exercises in the region as an intimidation tactic.

At issue is a post on social media by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) showing images of the Penghu Islands, home to a major Taiwanese airbase, and suggesting its planes were on Taiwan’s doorstep. Tung Pei-lun, vice chief of operations staff of the Taiwanese air force, denied that recent Chinese drills in the Taiwan Strait had come close to Penghu.

“China used exaggerated cognitive warfare tricks to show how close it was to Penghu, which is not true,” Tung told reporters on Tuesday. He said Chinese planes were operating north and southwest of Taiwan, in some cases crossing the unofficial center line into Taiwanese airspace, but PLA planes were flying closer to the Chinese coast than from Penghu.

The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command (ETC), the unit responsible for the region that includes the Taiwan Strait, has held Navy and Air Force drills around Taiwan as a demonstration of force after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taipei earlier this month. Tensions escalated further on Sunday, when another US congressional delegation visited Taiwan.

“The CCP {Chinese Communist Party} acts in this defiant way towards us every day now,” Taiwanese Defense Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang told reporters on Tuesday. “From our perspective, it’s just an opportunity to train more.”

More than 30 US lawmakers have visited Taiwan since last year, including 19 this month alone. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has pledged to reunite with the island, by force if necessary.

Beijing severed military and climate ties with Washington after Pelosi’s trip, saying it undermined China’s sovereignty and emboldened separatists. The ETC is committed to “bury the invading enemies.”
