Teenager accused of murder to stand trial for young offender in March

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – One of two teenagers charged in the shooting death of 20-year-old Montrell Wilson is due to be heard in March, court records show.

Darieon Nelson was 19 at the time of the January 2022 incident. A 17-year-old has also been arrested and charged in connection with Wilson’s death. Nelson has been charged with felony murder, while the unnamed teenager has been charged with capital murder and first-degree assault.

Huntsville Police Department officers were called to the 2400 block of Tuxedo Drive on January 13, 2022, where Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene and a 31-year-old man was seriously injured.

Nelson was recently indicted by a Madison County grand jury, and a jury trial was originally scheduled for March. However, court records show he is now applying for juvenile delinquent status, given his age at the time of Wilson’s murder.

In the indictment, the grand jury charged Nelson with attempting to distribute a felony controlled substance, and during that felony he is charged with shooting and killing Wilson.

Madison County Circuit Judge Claude Hundley is scheduled to hear Nelson’s young offender case on March 31, 2023.
