The UK carried out its last evacuation flight from Sudan on Saturday, as the United States and France also flew groups of foreign nationals out of the conflict-torn African country.

The moves come amid a deteriorating security situation in Sudan, as fighting continues between the Sudanese armed forces and its rival paramilitary rapid support forces.

The British government has decided to end evacuation flights “due to a drop in demand for British nationals and because the situation on the ground remains unstable,” the British Foreign Office said in a statement.

“The focus will now be on providing consular support to British nationals in Port Sudan and neighboring countries in the region,” he said, noting that more than 1,888 people have been evacuated to 21 flights during the operation.

A French plane arrived in Chad on Friday carrying personnel from the UN and international non-profit humanitarian organizations. France has evacuated more than a thousand people from Sudan since the outbreak of hostilities.

The US State Department said on Saturday that a convoy of US citizens, local employees and citizens of partner countries had arrived in Port Sudan and were assisting eligible people to travel to Saudi Arabia.

“Intensive negotiations led by the United States with the support of our regional and international partners enabled the security conditions that enabled the departure of thousands of foreign and American citizens,” the State Department said.

“We continue,” he added, “to call on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to end the fighting that endangers civilians.”
