What is open on New Years Day and the day after?

The countdown to a new year has arrived, which means that many places will close their doors to observe the federal holiday.

Many government offices and banks across the country will close on Monday, January 2, to mark the New Year. Many people will spend their New Year’s Eve, which falls on a Saturday this year, working because it’s not a federal holiday.

Here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day this year:

Banks

Knowing your bank’s holiday hours can save you from being stranded at the last minute without access to the bank.

Many banks, such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Capital One, close Mondays for the holidays. New Year’s Eve is a normal bank business day, however, times may vary from normal branch opening hours.

Any banking you do online on a holiday will not start processing until the next business day.

NYSE and Nasdaq

U.S. financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange, will be closed Monday for the New Year. Exchanges operated by Nasdaq Inc. will be open.

CVS, Walgreens

Most locations will be open during normal hours, but some stores may have reduced hours.

To be sure, contact your nearby pharmacy to check their opening hours.

USPS, FedEx, UPS

USPS post offices will close for New Years Day. Post offices will be closed on Sunday and Monday and mail will not be collected from blue collection boxes. Only priority express mail will be delivered on these days, according to the office holiday schedule.

Post offices will remain open on New Year’s Eve, although some may have limited hours, and regular mail will be delivered. If you drop off mail at the blue box, collections may start earlier, so drop off your mail before noon.

UPS locations are open with limited pickup for air and international services only – if scheduled before Thursday, December 29. Ground service pickup will not operate, although UPS Express Critical is still available, its website says.

FedEx will have changed express delivery services and business hours on Friday before New Year’s Eve, with some locations closing earlier. Contact your local FedEx branch for details. Locations will be closed and only Custom Critical packages will be delivered on New Years Day.

Government offices

All non-essential government offices, such as courts, will be closed on the first Monday of the year.

grocery stores

Many grocery stores in the United States remain open on New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve, some with adjusted hours, including Walmart, Whole Foods, Target, Costco and Kroger.
