Why we secretly love party conferences – POLITICO

It’s time for the strangest few weeks on the British political calendar: conference season.

Host Ailbhe Rea takes us on a whirlwind tour of speeches, side events, champagne receptions and bad karaoke nights at the Tory and Labor annual conference, with the help of Emily Thornberry , Labour’s shadow attorney general and conference veteran. Two former advisers to Conservative ministers, Tim Smith and Jamie Njoku-Goodwin, tell the inside story of some of their party’s best and worst speeches and some of their own conference memories.

Mikey Smith, the Mirror’s Whitehall correspondent, talks about the conference’s ‘blunder’ – and how he derailed the Labor conference when he recorded deputy party leader Angela Rayner calling the Tories ‘ scum”.

What is all this for? Why do initiates worship? And does it all really matter?
